AES-256 Encryption Online
Encrypt text with AES-256-GCM, the standard used by banks and secure apps, right in your browser.
Camera access needs your permission, and works best on https:// pages.

About this generator
AES-256 is a symmetric cipher: the same key locks and unlocks the data. This tool uses it in GCM mode, which also detects tampering, and derives the key from your password with PBKDF2 and a fresh random salt for every message. It runs on your device with the browser's built-in Web Crypto, so your text and password are never uploaded.
How to use this tool
- 1
Enter text and password
The password is turned into a 256-bit key with PBKDF2.
- 2
Encrypt
A random salt and nonce are created for each message, so the same text never produces the same result twice.
- 3
Share and decrypt
Send the result. The other person needs the same password to decrypt it.
Frequently asked questions
- What is AES-256-GCM?
- AES is a widely used encryption standard, 256 refers to the key size, and GCM is a mode that also checks that the message was not changed.
- How is the key made from my password?
- With PBKDF2 using a random salt, which makes guessing passwords much slower.
- Is AES-256 unbreakable?
- There is no known practical way to break it. In practice the weak point is the password, so choose a long one.
