About this generator

Braille is a touch alphabet built from cells of six dots, arranged in two columns of three. Different patterns of raised dots stand for letters, numbers, punctuation and, in Grade 2, whole words and common letter groups. This translator converts text to Braille and Braille back to text as you type, shows every cell dot by dot, lets you build a cell on a dot pad and practise with a quiz. You can copy the Braille, print it at real size, download a .txt or .brf file for an embosser, save a PNG or SVG card, or make a 3D nameplate file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I translate text to Braille?
Type or paste your text with Text to Braille selected. Each letter becomes a Braille cell, capital letters get a capital sign and numbers get a number sign. Copy the result or download it.
What is the difference between Grade 1 and Grade 2 Braille?
Grade 1 writes every letter in full. Grade 2 uses contractions: single cells for common words such as and, for, the and with, and short signs for common letter groups, which makes text shorter. This tool supports the common word signs and letter groups, but not every contraction.
Can I convert Braille back to text?
Yes. Choose Braille to Text and paste Braille characters. The tool reads letters, numbers, capital signs and punctuation, and Grade 2 word signs when Grade 2 is selected.
Can I emboss or print the result?
You can print at real size to check the layout, and download a .brf file, the format Braille embossers use. For official or school documents, have a qualified Braille transcriber check the result.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The translation runs in your browser and your text is not sent to a server.
What is the Braille art and bio feature?
It turns text or a name into a pattern of Braille-style dots. It uses 8-dot Unicode Braille characters, so it is decoration, not real 6-dot Braille.
